The Importance of Timber
Quality: All our boards are sourced from Northern Sweden and Finland. This is among the best quality timber you can buy either in Europe or anywhere else in the World. It originally went into the Viking longboats…
Size is Important: The timber section used is directly proportional to timber strength. Timber section and therefore strength = Life of a box. We use a full 1” thick board. Its not planned down to ¾”. The 1” board is used for a reason – its very strong and last a long time, if you reduce the thickness you reduce the strength.
Nail plated side panels v Glued boards
Strength: Nail plates, the same plates are used in US timber frame houses, are used to stiffen our boxes. They provide unparalleled stacking and racking performance in boxes especially when full and being moved.
Durability: As with a house you don’t want a stack of full boxes flexing and potentially falling down – using nail plates they don’t. Recent research we carried out tells us that on average our boxes last 15-17 years on the farm before needed replacement.
Bolted corner post v Internal Iron Bracket
Bolted corner post is designed to carry the weight of the boxes above, directly down through the post into the post of the boxes below until ultimately it reaches the floor.
The corner post is bolted to give vital extra rigidity into the box stiffening it. The post takes the knocks boxes get on a farm so it needs to be very rigid.
The bolted post also allows the internal surfaces of the box to be completely smooth so that nothing damages stored produce.
Box flex and Life Expectancy
In the UK users have found boxes manufactured with planned timbers (reduced ¾” thickness) and glued boards flex when handled fully loaded. They have also found impact damage during everyday use is relatively high compared to standard designs. One store with 6,500 boxes glued type boxes said that “this type of box isn’t as strong as an HK box. We don’t expect them to last as long as your (HK Timbers) boxes”.
